After the Daily Breeze published the following comment made by Geraldine Ferraro, many viewed her statement as racist:
“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position… and if he was a woman of any color he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”
When Diane Sawyer interviewed Geraldine on Good Morning America, it appeared as if Geraldine blamed the press for the controversy about her statement to the Daily Breeze being racist.
“The sad thing is — is that my comments have been taken so out of context and been spun by the Obama campaign as racist that, you know, it’s doing precisely what they don’t want done… it’s going to the Democrat party and dividing us even more,” Geraldine told Diane Sawyer.
Now doesn’t that sound to you as if she’s blaming the press for the way her comments were construed? Personally, I don’t think it’s the presses fault, because they quoted what she said. In addition, when Diane Sawyer read her comments back to her, Geraldine, in a round-about way, confirmed that she did say those things. And that brings me to my point: It’s not the presses fault that so many viewed her comments to be racist, it’s her own fault for saying what she did the way she did. Now I’m not implying that Geraldine’s racist, but I do believe the press is not to blame, because Geraldine could’ve answered the question differently. Either way, though, sometimes we tend to blurt things out before thinking, and in this case, Geraldine could at least apologize, but instead, she refuses to do that. In fact, when Diane asked Geraldine if she was sorry, Geraldine replied, “Absolutely not!”
